I was in a car accident when I was 16, 13 years ago. I was hit by a semi-truck on my side of the car and while I survived, my best friend who was my passenger did not. I didn’t walk away unharmed, obviously getting hit by another vehicle going at least 55 mph is going to cause some injuries. I was in a coma for 9 days and suffered a traumatic brain injury, broke my femur bone in half, and paralyzed the third nerve in my eye, causing me to have permanent double vision. It took me about 45 days to recover and I made it back to school for my first full day of my Junior year. Here I am, 13 years later, happily married and about to take my boards to become a nurse and there are still days I find it hard to exist. I think about my friend at least once every day and I have a scar down the middle of my nose that is a constant reminder of where I’ve been. I know I have big things in store for me and I don’t know why I survived but I live every day like that day is why I’m here. I put off becoming a nurse because I didn’t think I could be in the hospital and not think about losing my friend but I have come to realize that this is what I was meant to be doing. I want to help others and share my journey and the miraculous survival that God performed in me. Toby Mac has a quote that reminds me of why I’m here: “maybe you went through it and survived, just so you can help someone else make it through”. I am beyond nervous for passing my NCLEX (boards to become a nurse) but I also know that God has big plans and ultimately He is in control. I will have this strap with me on test day along with my Don’t Rush strap to give me support and to remind me that there are people all over the world who care about me and the wonderful Zox community.
