Story:
I will never forget the words that were said to me by what I thought were my friends. “We just needed a break from you” is what they told me when I approached them about why they had been avoiding me. In high school, I was in a friend group with two other girls. We all got along well and did just about everything together. We had classes together, studied together, and ate lunch together just about every day. One day, they weren’t in our usual spot where we all met for lunch. I figured maybe they had a project they needed to go work on, so I ate lunch with some other friends for the day. When their avoidance of me became a regular occurrence, I began to feel like it was something more personal. I continued to be stood up by them for weeks until I finally gained the courage to ask why they were being so mean. Their response being, that they needed a break from me. They felt that because I held different values than them, they didn’t want to be around me, thinking that I would judge them. That hurt me deeply. I couldn’t believe that my friends, who I truly cared about, thought I would judge them. I would never make someone feel bad for being their own person. I soon realized, these were not real friends.
It took me a while to get over the feeling of being outcasted by people I trusted, but the experience taught me a very valuable lesson. We are all unique, with our own thoughts, ideas, personalities, cultures, histories, and more, that make us who we are. If there are people in your life who cannot appreciate you for your individuality, then they do not deserve to be around you. Instead, we want to celebrate one another and learn from the differences we all have. What a boring world we would live in if everyone was the same. I have learned it is so important to follow your own heart, rather than try to fit a mold that pleases others. Don’t ever be afraid to go your own way and take the road less traveled. You will find that it is much more fulfilling than trying to be like everyone else.
